Since then, I have followed up several times, and each time he's just said "I don't think about these things" and "I'm not a planner", as if we hadn't had previous conversations where he committed to thinking about it.

Boyfriend (31m) has deflected my (29f) multiple attempts to establish a timeline for next steps. Is there any way forward or have I ruined everything?

Together 3 years. I made it clear from the start I wanted kids and marriage eventually, and he was on the same page. As we've gotten older, "eventually" doesn't cut it, and I've asked him several times for a timeline of when he sees us getting engaged/married. I do not want a big wedding (would prefer no wedding at all), I just want to be married before children.

Originally he said he still had some things to work out personally, so I let it be for a few months. When I followed up again, I told him I needed him to take some time to think about a realistic timeline and let me know, so I could figure out if that worked for me.

Last month we had this talk again, and I finally felt like he had heard me. He said he understood what I was asking for, and agreed to "give it some thought in a practical context" over the next few weeks. I felt so sure that he meant what he said, that I finally felt peace of mind and we had the most relaxed and happy month after that.

Yesterday, I finally followed up and asked him whether he'd given any thought to the timeline question, and again he hit me with "I don't think about these things", as if he hadn't specifically agreed to think about it this time. The response truly broke my heart, and it led to a very long, very emotional

conversation where I opened up about my fears, about how I worry we will never get married, how I worry I'm giving up my fertile years and will miss the chance to have kids. He got upset, and asked why we can't just "discuss this stuff in a normal way without me always

getting so upset" - but I'm upset because I've brought it up so many times now and each time it's like we're back at square one. He then mentioned that he's "thought about how and where" he's going to propose - but again that's not what I'm after! All I've been asking for this whole time is a timeline, which he still can't give me.

I'd specifically been avoiding bringing this up again because I felt like if I brought it up too many times, I'd run the risk of him feeling pressured to marry me (when again, all I'm asking for is a timeline so I can understand whether or not we're compatible). Well, that's how it

feels now - after all these conversations and now a very emotionally-charged argument about it, I now feel as though any proposal I get would be a "shut up" proposal and not something he actually wants to do, which makes me think the whole thing is doomed.

These conversations turn me into someone I don't want to be - I feel like a nag, a harpy, a pathetic girl crying because a guy won't marry her. Outside of this one issue, the relationship is great. He is truly my dream partner, he's caring, sweet, thoughtful, fun, smart,

and lovely. But the constant refusal to work with me on this has made me feel so rejected and hurt. On one hand, the idea of throwing away an otherwise perfect relationship with the man of my dreams over this one thing

seems ridiculous. On the other hand I'm so scared I'm wasting my fertile years with someone who has no intention of actually having a marriage and kids with me. I'm completely at a loss for what to do. Do I just give up on the idea of marriage and kids altogether and just be happy I found a good guy?

Tldr: I'm with my dream man but he's refused to discuss next steps, and I've pushed on this to the point where I'm not sure I could trust that any future discussion or proposal would be genuine. What is the best way forward here?

Traeyze . 12h ago Late 30s Male A bigger problem here is how he discusses these things. Deflecting, biding time, making hollow promises and then doubling back [almost approaching gaslighting territory in the process in terms of pretending conversations didn't happen], he even started to make out you are 'emotional' and unreasonable despite him clearly being the source of it due to how wishy washy he is.

So it isn't just a marriage problem. It is also a communication problem. It is also a respect and care problem give how easily and readily he will make you feel self conscious as a way to derail discussion. And it's working. You are being so harsh on yourself despite him clearly being unreasonable, unfair, outright gross. I think you are idealising him given that. You have made yourself the one in the wrong, wondering if you're reasonable or not when a lot of how he handled this is outright toxi

EmceeSuzy 12h ago • The whole thing is doomed. He is not sweet. He is not thoughtful. He is not lovely. You are wasting your time with him and he is doing everything in his power to manipulate you into wasting your fertile years trying to get him to commit. That is a horrible thing to do to any human. being, let alone someone who is your romantic partner. He is not a good guy. When you find one, please update us.

Adventurous-Sand6711 . 12h ago He is only your dream partner if you just go along and don't talk about the future, if you don't want to have discussions he doesn't want to have and if you don't think about marriage and children. How can you build a future with someone who refuses to plan a future with you? Who brushes off your concerns and diminishes your feelings?

mediocreravenclaw 12h ago . Stop letting him deflect. Pick a night you know you're both free, sit down and talk it through. If he says he "hasn't thought about it" then that's perfect, he has the time to think about it right now. Being able to work through issues together is so important for couples. What an excellent opportunity to try problem solving. together before deciding to legally commit to one another or have children.

410Writer 12h ago . Three years is plenty of time to at least consider where you're headed. If he's dodging the question like it's a dodgeball tournament, there's a reason. And it's not that he's just not a "planner"-he's a grown man, not a leaf blowing in the wind.

You've gotta decide, do you keep sitting on this train, hoping he eventually cares about the destination, or do you jump off at the next stop and find someone who's on the same journey as you? Life doesn't wait, and neither should you.
